15 September 2016

Stars of stage and screen to bring footballing heroes of WW1 to life

This year to mark the 100 year centenary of the battle of the Somme, The Royal British Legion have sponsored a new play called 'The Greater Game'.

The Greater Game which is also supported by the PFA and is part of Sports remembers tells the amazing true story of the footballers who fought at the Somme, a number of whom of never returned.

In December 1914 footballers up and down the country met in Fulham Town hall to sign up into the 17th Battalion Middlesex Regiment, which would later become better known as 'The Footballers' Battalion'.

Footballers such as Major Frank Buckley and 2nd Lieutenant Walter Tull signed up to fight in The Great War. More of a team effort came from Clapton Orient who had all 41 members of its playing and backroom staff sign up en masse.

The show is going out at the Southwark Playhouse from tonight (September 15) - October 15 and will be directed by well known and respected director Tilly Vosburgh. Tilly has been working in the industry for over 40 years and has assembled a cast worthy of any stage and to tell any story.

Nick Hancock will be playing Billy Holmes who played for Manchester City before joining the army and becoming manager of Clapton Orient. Charlie Clements will be playing the O's captain Fred 'Spider' Parker, whose letters back from the Somme have been captured in the play and Danny Walters will be playing the wise cracking cockney Nolan 'Peggy' Evans.

Alongside these well known actors Tilly has assembled a young and talented cast who include RADA graduates Jake Mann and also Peter Hannah, who will be playing hero Richard McFadden who was well known for his bravery, both back in England as well as in France. William Howard (winner of the Carleton Hobbs award) will be playing William Jonas, McFadden's life long friend and fellow footballer and soldier.
