Young O's brush aside the Glovers to claim Youth Alliance Cup victoryGoals from Tristan Abrahams and Steven Alzate were enough to see Leyton Orient under-18s progress to the next round of the Youth Alliance Cup with a 2-0 victory against Yeovil Town on Saturday.
As usual the young O’s created a number of chances throughout, and on another day could have come away with a much higher scoreline.
With first team call ups and injury stricken players, Richard Thomas fielded several first-year scholars and two under-16s in the starting line-up. Charles Clayden and Ernold Hexiou impressed in their first starts for the under-18s and didn’t seem fazed by the occasion.
Orient's first chance started with a great pass from Steven Alzate who found Tristan Abrahams in the box, who then played a unselfish ball to Ruel Sotiriou who seem almost certain to score but the goalkeeper denied Orient an opener with a great reaction save. This would not be the last time the young keeper would be called upon.
Minutes later, Thomas’ side passed up another opportunity. Sotiriou picked up a loose ball and ran through putting the O’s in a favourable three v two situation. He slid in Sam Dalby but the shot was straight at the Yeovil shot stopper who had his positioning spot on.
The O’s then thought they had opened the scoring but the goal was disallowed. Dalby picked up a clearance on the halfway line and brilliantly dribbled his way through to the edge of box before unselfishly playing in Charles Clayden on the left who delivered a well-timed ball across the face of goal which Abrahams turned in, only to see the offside flag raised.
The half was coming to an end but not before the O’s got the first goal. Ernold Hexiou did well to start the move picking up the loose ball and Dalby then found Alzate who side stepped the defender and calmly slotted the ball in the back of the net. A lead the O’s thoroughly deserved going into the break.
Yeovil didn’t provide much of a threat to the O’s defence, and were unable to record a shot on target throughout the second half, with their goalkeeper keeping them in the game.
With 20 minutes left to play Abrahams sealed the O’s lead with the team finally taking advantage from a set piece. A corner led to a scramble in the box with the O’s trying to get a clean shot away and Abrahams took advantage of the loose ball and skilfully scored with a back heel from close range.
