NEWS: O's swoop for Dayton

Midfielder completes O’s move

1 August 2017

The Club is delighted to confirm the signing of midfielder James Dayton.

Dayton, 28, has agreed a two-year deal with the O’s following a successful trial period.

A product of the Crystal Palace youth system having joined the Eagles at the age of 10, Dayton signed his first professional contract in 2007.

While at Selhurst Park, the midfielder spent short spells on loan at both Yeovil Town and Crawley Town during the 2008-09 season.

After departing Palace in 2009, Dayton spent a period with the Glenn Hoddle Academy before moving to Scotland ahead of the 2010-11 campaign in order to pen a three-year deal at Kilmarnock.

Comfortable playing on either wing, Dayton saw his first season in the Scottish Premier League disrupted by a knee injury, but after making a full recovery helped Killie lift the Scottish League Cup at the end of the 2011-12 season and amassed a total of 74 appearances before departing in 2013.

Having rejected the offer of a new two-year deal at Killie, the midfielder returned to England in May 2013 when he signed for Oldham Athletic.

Dayton proved to be a key figure during his first season with the Latics, making 40 appearances throughout the 2013-14 season.

Having made a further 22 appearances throughout the first half of the following campaign, Dayton then returned to Scotland in January 2015 in order to join St Mirren.

The 28-year-old arrives in E10 following two years at Cheltenham Town, where he made a total of 59 appearances – including 36 appearances in all competitions last season.
