Young O's edged out by ExilesTwo second half goals were too much for the young O’s to overcome as they lost out 2-1 at home to Newport County.
Rian McLean had put Orient, fielding a number of under-16s, ahead but the Welsh outfit came on strong in the second period to secure the victory as the O’s rued their missed opportunities in the first half.
The home side had a number of chances in the opening stages. Ruel Sotiriou went close after the O’s won back possession in the final third following good pressure from Charles Clayden but his shot was denied by a good save.
Having started the brighter of the sides, the O's were then able to break the deadlock from a set piece. Sotiriou's mazy run resulted with the forward being brought down just outside the area, and the first-year scholar brushed himself down to take the free-kick which was parried away by the Exiles stopper into the path of McLean who slotted the ball into the net.
Sotiriou was proving to be lively in attack, and had another good chance to double the O’s lead. A poor touch from the Newport centre half allowed Sotiriou to run through on goal, one-on-one with the goalkeeper but striker could only place his effort wide of the post.
Following the interval, the referee then gave Newport a lifeline as he pointed to the spot and awarded the penalty after Mason Hall was adjudged to have brought down Momodou Touray. Rhys Kavanagh took the spot kick and put the ball past Arthur Janata in the Orient goal to make it 1-1.
The half was to get even worse for the O’s as Joe Hunt put the visitors ahead with an impressive goal from the left flank. The full back seemed to be aiming for a cross but the ball snuck into the top right corner of the goal, catching Janata off guard.
A disappointing second half from Orient cost them the valuable three points and the young O’s regretted not finishing their chances created in the opening 45, as they controlled the game for large spells.
Next up for the O’s is another home game, as they host Bristol Rovers at 12pm on Saturday.
