The recent stadium tour, held during the October half-term school break, ended up lasting a marathon two-and-a-half hours - but nobody was complaining!
Usually taking around 90 minutes, the addition of special and surprise guests ensured that those attending certainly got value for money!
On welcoming the visitors at the club reception, host and Community Liaison Officer, Howard Gould, then proceeded to show the second floor Gallery and third floor Olympic Suite before entering the Boardroom and being met by Vice-Chairman and Principal Investor Kent Teague.
Sitting around the Boardroom table, Kent was happy to chat and answer questions on various subjects before having the mandatory ‘photo-call’ as the group moved off to continue the tour 30 minutes later.
The view from the media balcony on the 5th floor was taken in before the highlight for some – a visit to the home team changing room and then pitch side via the tunnel. However, unbeknown to those now happily taking photos in the changing room, Howard had organised a surprise visit from two of the young stars currently excelling at the club, namely Myles Judd and Henry Ochieng.
“It’s a privilege of the job that I manage the player’s community commitments and I think to enhance the tour with a player or two can really make it a truly unforgettable experience,” said Howard. “Although young, Henry and Myles are extremely popular and I think this was Henry’s debut in the community so it was a good chance for him to meet fans in familiar surroundings.”
After a while of questions and photographs and thanks to the player’s, the tour continued to the East stand to view the old changing rooms and the recently renovated ‘Fans For Diversity Hub’, formerly the player’s bar, but not before passing an integral member of the O’s team, groundsman Colin James. The opportunity was taken and Colin welcomed questions and spent more than fifteen minutes explaining, amongst other things, seed types, grass height and pitch watering!
Eventually, the tour returned to the West stand where team posters were handed out and the journeys home commenced.
Spencer, who had travelled up from Brighton with his young son said, “Thank you for the tour today. You made it special and my son’s day! We have a superb club.” And Caroline said, “A really enjoyable tour and highly recommended, especially if looking for nostalgia.”
