REPORT: Leyton Orient 4-1 Guiseley AFC

Bonne bags a hat-trick as O's claim emphatic victory

2 September 2017

Macauley Bonne had the golden touch this afternoon as he bagged a hat-trick to lead the O’s to a 4-1 victory at home to Guiseley.

The summer arrival notched two penalties late in the first half to cancel out, Kayode Odejayi’s 36th minute opener, before debutant Matt Harrold headed in his first for the Club less than two minutes after coming off the bench.

Victory was then sealed eight minutes from time when Harrold and Bonne combined for the latter to claim his hat-trick with a calm finish.

Following the Bank Holiday victory at Maidenhead United, Head Coach Steve Davis made three changes to the starting line-up, as Henry Ochieng made his first start in the absence of Alex Lawless who sustained a hip flexor injury while Jobi McAnuff and David Mooney returned in place of Romuald Boco Josh Koroma.

Myles Judd and deadline Day signing Matt Harrold were also included in the squad for the first time this campaign.

Orient started brightly and had two great chances within the first six minutes, after long spells of possession allowed the O’s in behind Guiseley’s defence.

The first, came to James Dayton who latched on the end of a Craig Clay through ball, but was closed down quickly by Guiseley keeper Joseph Green before being ruled offside.

The second saw Jobi McAnuff find his way in behind the visitor’s back line and take the ball around the keeper before his shot was blocked at the near post by an on running defender.

Again, Orient pressed for the opener when Macauley Bonne charged down Green, and blocked the keeper’s clearance. The ball then ran across the goalline, inches away from crossing it before rolling out for a goal kick after the strikers attempt to get it over the line.

Midway through the first half play began to slow down but despite having enjoyed large spells of possession, Orient found themselves a goal behind when Kayode Odejayi got on the end of a cross from the right and stabbed the ball home from close range, giving the visitors the lead on 36 minutes.

The lead didn’t last long however, as Mooney’s burst into the box allowed him to clip a ball towards the back post, but it was handled by Marcus Williams on the way and the referee awarded the O’s a penalty kick.

Striker Bonne stepped up to slot home and send the keeper the wrong way to claim his fifth goal of the season and first of the day.

Just after the fourth official announced an extra three minutes of play, Mooney was in the box again but this time he was tripped by Williams and the referee awarded the O’s a second penalty.

Minutes after converting the first one, Bonne kept his composure and despite the keeper going the right way this time, he couldn’t get fingers on Bonne’s kick making it 2-1 to the O’s.

The two teams returned for the second half unchanged, the O’s again enjoyed much of the possession in the opening ten minutes, but were unable to make the break-through.

Minutes before the hour mark, Orient had their first clear chance since the break, when Dayton floated a lovely ball in to the box but it was directed wide by the head of Josh Coulson.

Elokobi was handed the captains arm band in the 63rd minute after David Mooney was substituted for debutant Matt Harrold.

It didn’t take long for the new signing to make an impact, Widdowson aimed a perfect cross towards the head of the striker and he met it cleanly directing the ball back in to the corner of the net scoring Orient’s third of the afternoon.

Bonne then deservedly completed his hat-trick in the 82nd minute after he latched on to the end of Harrold’s flick. The striker then raced through one-on-one with the keeper and finished brilliantly to secure the match ball.

The forward then left the field to a standing ovation when replaced by Josh Koroma for the final minutes, and the O’s saw out the four minutes of stoppage time with ease.
