Midfielder Craig Clay spoke to leytonorient.com following the 1-0 defeat to Boreham Wood on Saturday...
“I think we killed ourselves with the first 15-20 minutes, I don’t think we started bright enough. Obviously that’s when they got the goal and think that just gave them that little lift, we were always going to be the team pushing in the second half but we lacked that bit of quality to break them down so overall very disappointing.
“The goal gave them a lift, it gave the momentum to them and puts that extra spring, that extra five yards commitment into their play but we brought that on ourselves. We didn’t get out the traps, it was a bit lacklustre and it wasn’t as crisp as we usually are.
“As I say, the first 15 minutes was nowhere near good enough, the last 20 minutes of the first half we pushed a bit more and had a few chances and maybe if one of those goes in, it is a completely different game but it didn’t quite drop, we were a bit unlucky.
“With a lot of teams when they get that goal and go 1-0 up they are going to sit a little bit more and we’re naturally going to press a bit more, trying to take some positives out of it we had some good chances; Koroma has just put one wide, Macca has got one blocked, a few here and there but like I say, I’m just disappointed.
“The Gaffer tried to give us a lift at half-time, we’ve got ourselves here for a reason and its not that first 20-25 minutes but just remember what we’ve been doing for the first 23 games of the season. Obviously we came out and huffed and puffed in the second but we just couldn’t quite get it
“I would say a draw probably would have been fair especially when you go off the chances in the second half but we’re all disappointed with that opening 25 minutes. We’re disappointed with ourselves, that’s not us, we’ve been focused in the opening 20 minutes of every game so it was just not good enough
“The Gaffer got us in there at the end and we were obviously a bit down but he has lifted us and said, look it is only the second defeat. we’re not used to losing so it does hit you that little bit more but the Gaffer has got his arm around us and told us what we need to do and I’m sure we’ll go back in training and be back straight at it."
