U18 REPORT: Cambridge United 1-0 Leyton Orient

O's suffer U's defeat

30 January 2018

The O’s youngsters were on the end of a 1-0 defeat away to Cambridge United in their last game of the regular season before the league splits in half.

A strike from close range in the first half was enough for Cambridge United to seal the three points, the O’s went close to an equaliser through Charles Clayden and Amin Benyoucef in the second half but couldn’t beat the U’s ‘keeper.

The reverse fixture saw the O’s run out the 1-0 victors at Whitbread’s back in August, when an Aaron Rowe strike was enough to earn a win got the home side.

The O’s got the game underway in Cambridge but it was the hosts who took an early lead when a free-kick from 20 yards was pounced upon when it was spilled back in to the path of the striker who smashed home from close range.

Moments later Charles Clayden forced a good save from the Cambridge ‘keeper after getting in behind the U’s defence. The parry from the keeper fell at the feet of Jaedon Phillips whose first-time shot was blocked on the line.

Plenty of action in the first quarter meant Orient ‘keeper Amedu produced a powerful right handed save to deny a long-range effort destined for the bottom corner, before Shadrach Ogie was present to cleat the danger.

Moments later Andrew Camilo-Tayaca threw his body on the line to block a shot lashed goal-wards following a scramble in the box.

Cambridge attacked again and this time struck the bar after a counter saw a floated cross volleyed on to the woodwork from six-yards out.

The hosts got the second half underway and started on the front foot as they enjoyed possession and posed a direct attacking threat to the O’s back line.

Despite the pressure the O’s stood firm and a quick counter attack saw Alfie Fleming sprint down the left wing before cutting it back to Amin Benyoucef who took a touch and fired inches wide of the target.

Up the other end of the pitch, a cross from deep forced another great save from Amedu from point blank range before a Cambridge man struck wide from inches out.

Possession was back in favour of the O’s when Benyoucef lashed an effort high over the bar after doing well to lose his marker inside the box.

Cambridge had the chance to double their lead eight minutes from time when a cut back to the edge of the box saw the resulting shot blocked by brave defending from Mason Hall, which then saw the hosts hold on to their lead until the final whistle.
