REPORT: Guiseley 1-3 Leyton Orient

Orient beat 10-man Guiseley

30 March 2018

Orient recorded back-to-back wins this afternoon after a 1-3 win over Guiseley at Nethermoor Park.

A Jobi McAnuff brace and injury time strike from Club captain David Mooney secured all three points in West Yorkshire.

Head Coach Justin Edinburgh made just one change to the side that overcame Woking in last weekend’s 3-0 first home win of 2018.

Dan Holman regained his starting position as the injured Matt Harrold sat this fixture out. Young full-back Myles Judd took a seat on the bench for the first time since the 4-1 win over Sutton United in December 2017 and he was joined by youngster Arthur Janata in place of Charlie Grainger.

The sides last met in September 2017, when a Macauley Bonne hat-trick and Matt Harrold debut header secured three points in the O’s 4-1 win over the West Yorkshire side.

Guiseley got the game underway, and Macauley Bonne had the first chance on goal for the O’s. Jobi McAnuff’s free-kick was cleared in to the air by the Gusieley defence and the Orient forward then struck a sweet volley towards goal, but Coddington was just about equal to it.

Bonne was involved again and this time turned provider when Craig Clay’s volley from inside the box dropped just wide of the post.

It was all Orient traffic in the opening minutes of the game, Josh Coulson was present to nod McAnuff’s corner back across goal to Sam Ling who headed towards the net but was denied by the ‘keeper.

Then, Nirennold pulled Bonne back as the forward advanced towards the box and received a yellow card for the offence. McAnuff’s attempt from the free-kick flew just wide of the target.

Guiseley had their first chance on goal after 20 minutes when former Orient man Rowan Liburd rose highest to connect with a cross, but the header dipped over the crossbar.

Bonne continued to be heavily involved in the first-half, the Orient front-man latched on to George Elokobi’s clearance before he cut on to his right foot and fired in to the side-netting.

A moment of madness almost saw the hosts take the lead when Alex Purver’s hanging cross drop behind Brill before Ling and Coulson combined to clear the danger.

The final chance of the half dropped to McAnuff whose deflected looping effort dropped wide of the far post to see the sides go in at half time level.

The second-half started in dramatic fashion as Gusieley ‘keeper Coddingon was sent off for tackling Bonne outside the box after the forward was through on goal.

Jobi McAnuff stepped up and then curled the resulting free-kick in to the top corner of the net to give the O’s the lead.

Excellent defensive work by Ebou Adams saw the midfielder break on the attack which ended in Brophy forcing a good save from Joe Green after the winger darted in to the box on the wide left.

Just as 10-man Guiseley started to attack the O's McAnuff picked up the ball in midfield and advanced towards goal, before firing low to Green’s left and in to the net to double Orient’s lead.

But a real moment of madness minutes later, as the O's gifted Guiseley a goal back when Joe Widdowson’s back pass bobbled over the foot of Brill and in to the net.

Orient were not flattened by the goal, Bonne went close after Clay beautifully found the forward inside the box but Green dived well to deny the effort.

As full time approached, newly introduced Josh Koroma sprinted towards the box and dug out a cross which Green dropped at the feet of Bonne whose shot was blocked by a Guiseley defender.

The final effort of the game was an Orient goal, David Mooney opened his body up and finished passed Green after Brophy’s cross was perfect for the forward as the game finished 1-3.
