A Leyton Orient XI competed well but lost to the odd goal in three during a behind-closed-doors friendly against Bristol City this afternoon.
The visitors got the game underway but it was Orient who would enjoy the best moments in the first half at The Breyer Group Stadium.
Both Dan Happe and Matt Harrold had chances to score inside the opening 10 minutes, with the O’s then going close twice in quick succession midway through the half. First, great work by Sotiriou saw the youngster retain possession out wide, look up and deliver a cross for Harrold, whose low effort was kept out superbly by the ‘keeper.
Moments later James Brophy found himself in space inside the box and turned onto his right, but fired straight at the goalkeeper.
Sotiriou and Harrold continued to work well together and both had opportunities before half-time to open the scoring. Sotiriou found space on the edge of the box but fired at the ‘keeper, whilst Harrold first flicked a Sweeney cross over the bar, then headed wide from a Lawless corner.
The final chance of the half came to Kyprianou just before the referee’s whistle. An excellent diagonal drive from Ogie saw the full-back get into the box and lay the ball back for the young midfielder who couldn’t hit the target.
The hosts picked up in the second half where they’d left off in the first, pushing forward and creating the bulk of the opportunities. Sotiriou and Kyprianou both went close before the former finally opened the scoring on 68 minutes, showing good persistence to latch onto a ball forward, evade two defenders and find the bottom corner.
Having soaked up pressure for most of the game, Bristol City pushed forward in the closing stages and drew level with seven minutes remaining. A rare foray forward saw one shot blocked, but the follow-up effort was fired high past Sam Sargeant.
Both teams went for the win but it was the visitors who snatched it in injury time, with a curling effort from the left into the far corner.
The next Vanarama National League game here at The Breyer Group Stadium is on Saturday when the O’s play Bromley in our latest Football for a Fiver fixture. The latest details on this game can be found here.
