U18 REPORT: Leyton Orient 2-4 Cambridge United

5 September 2018

Orient U18s were defeated 2-4 by Cambridge United at Old Chigwellians earlier this week.

Goals from Bradley McClenaghan and Jaedon Phillips were not enough as Orient taste defeat in six goal thriller.

Cambridge took the lead after just four minutes, Orient tried to  defend a quick attack, however lost the ball before it's poked in behind the defensive line where the striker had time to stroke the ball into the net. A composed finish from the forward.

Cambridge then doubled their lead. United's high pressure forced Orient to lose the ball and they wasted no time whipping the ball into the box. The Cambridge forward beat everyone to the ball and looped a header over Goalkeeper Samuel Amedu.

Orient displayed determination as they tirelessly worked to get back in to the game and it paid off when the O's got on the score sheet shortly after the half an hour mark.

The team turned defence into attack instantly, ultimately ending in Ernold Haxhiu’s curling cross being hammered home by the head of Bradley McClenaghan. The midfielder’s cross was hung in the air invitingly and Orient forward McClenaghan wanted it more than anyone as his powerful header looked to have clawed his side back into the game.

A calm close range finish and then a looping header in the 4th and 13th minute respectively put Cambridge in the driving seat early. McClenaghan’s goal looked to swing momentum until Cambridge scored their third goal minutes after and took a 3-1 lead into half time.

Orient will kick themselves over Cambridge's third goal. The visitors came forward again and whipped the ball into the box. An Orient defender is first to the ball but can only clear it right to the feet of an opposition player. With time and space the United player slotted a home a right footed shot into the top corner on the net.

Substitute Jaedon Phillips then scored Orient’s second goal in the game with a composed one touch finish.

A short goal kick out to the left flank, was switched to right-back Wynford Marfo who headed down the ball to the O’s winger who elegantly lofted the ball in behind the Cambridge defence for Phillips to score.

The striker made no mistake with his finish, giving the keeper the eyes and then wrapping the ball into the keepers near side.

The goal gave Orient 20 minutes to find an equaliser, unfortunately it was Cambridge who were next to score. Like in the first half, they replied almost instantly to make the score 4-2. United capitalised on a weak clearance and whipped the ball back into the danger area where their forward floated a header into the top corner.

The fourth goal was much similar to the first. A teasing ball into the box is floated perfectly onto the forwards head. He guides his header into the far post and reinstates the away sides two goal cushion as the game came to a conclusion.

This was Orient’s first home game of the season at Old Chigwellians Sports ground, The O’s will now host MK Dons on 4, September 2018.

GOALS: McClenaghan, Phillips
