What we learned: Sutton United (H)

30 September 2018

The O's tasted defeat for the first time in 2018/19 on Saturday when they fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Sutton United, ending a 13-match unbeaten run.

Here's what we learned on Saturday...

1. Response needed

13 matches unbeaten was a Club record but it was a run that was always going to end, and for the second season running it was Sutton United who recorded our first defeat of the campaign. However, under Justin Edinburgh, the O's have never lost two games in a row so will now be looking to respond positively against Maidenhead United next week.

2. Shooting Blanks

The last time the O's failed to score in a match was in April with Saturday's defeat ending a run of 14 games where Edinburgh's men have netted. The Club scored 16 goals in September, the most in a month since August 2013/14 when Russell Slade's side netted the same total, so we're not worried!

3. Defensive rock

The O's may have fallen to a defeat but they continued the fine defensive record this season, having conceded more than once in a game on just one occasion. The defence, largely featuring Josh Coulson, Marvin Ekpiteta, Myles Judd and Joe Widdowson, have conceded the third lowest total in the league and with an average of two goals scored per match it is a good record to have.

4. Substitutes still making an impact!

One of the things that has signified this campaign so far is that players are coming off the bench and making an impact. Edinburgh has had constant selection headaches, especially with the return of James Brophy, Sam Ling and George Elokobi in recent weeks, while players like James Alabi and Dale Gorman have impressed when not starting. The latter went close yesterday, his curling effort hitting the bar.

5. Well-backed

The attendance yesterday was 5,627 and with 308 of them being Sutton United fans, it meant there were 5,316 Orient supporters at the Breyer Group Stadium. We had more Orient supporters in E10 than any other match yesterday had in combined attendance, and they certainly created an excellent atmosphere!
