U18 Report: Bristol Rovers 2-1 Leyton Orient

8 April 2019

An encouraging performance was left unrewarded as the U18’s were unable to find an equaliser after Lawrence Hammond halved the deficit from the spot.

Hammond’s 41st minute spot kick looked to revitalise his side who had fallen 2-0 down after 39 minutes of the first-half.

Bristol took the lead with a splendid free-kick four minutes into the game. A perfectly drilled effort from 25-yards wrapped around the wall and into the back of net.

Orient’s first taste of goal came before the 10 minute mark as Finlay Lovatt’s header bounced wide of the mark after meeting Brendon Shabani’s cross from the left flank.

Aridas Vilinauskas stood strong at his near post to deflect the ball from danger, before Jeremie Sivi tested the opposition goalkeeper, as both sides looked for the next goal.

The next chance fell to Orient, with Trialist A looking to make an impression, he headed Jayden Sweeney’s in-swinging corner onto the roof of the net.

A rare attack presented a glorious chance to The Pirates, Vilinauskas was called upon to make a one-on-one save with his right boot as the opposition forward hit the ball too close to the O’s stopper.

Bradley McClenaghan found Jordan Adeyemi with a superb through ball but a last ditch tackle denied Adeyemi an opportunity to pull the trigger from inside the box, after losing his man with a good run.

A misplaced pass gifted Bristol an opportunity, their forward clinically stroked the ball home to make it 2-0 with 39 minutes on the clock.

A second goal flattered the hosts and the O’s soon pulled themselves within touching distance of their opposition. The referee pointed to the spot after Hammond was pulled back in the six-yard box as he tried to head the ball.

Forward Hammond stepped up to take the spot-kick, tucking the ball into the bottom left with his right foot, to pull a goal back before the break.

A superb save denied Orient an equaliser early in the second-half. Adeyemi’s cute chip was smothered by the on-rushing keeper after a long ball saw the forward in behind the Bristol defence.

Sweeney would be next to test the keeper; the left-back fired across goal from inside the area, forcing the number one into a diving save after playing a sharp one-two with Shabani on the edge of the box.

Despite waves of pressure throughout the second-half, The O’s couldn’t find what would have been a deserved equaliser, with the game finishing 2-1 to the hosts.

Next Up: Orient host Gillingham next Saturday April 13th.
