U18 REPORT: Cambridge United 5-0 Leyton Orient

18 February 2019

O’s fell to a 5-0 defeat away to Cambridge United this weekend, as they returned to League action for the first time in a month.

After being three goals down at half-time, Orient were unable to turn the tie around as the U’s added a couple more in the second half.

Anthony Papadopoulos was the only player to return to the starting line-up, as the O's were forced into ten changes due to a host of injuries.

Orient got the action underway, but soon fell behind, as the hosts took the lead after two minutes. A low ball into the box from the left flank, trickled kindly to the feet of an attacker who calmly placed the ball into the net with his right foot.

Orient enjoyed plenty of possession after falling behind and played some sharp one touch football in midfield, however, shooting opportunities were sparse.

United punished the visitors on the half-hour mark doubling their lead with a neat header at the front post, following a cross from the right.

Cambridge threatened every time they came forward, wasting multiple chances as they upped the tempo before the close of the half.

A third goal came after 38 minutes; a scramble in the goal mouth was nodded home from close range, after an initial effort had smacked Rhys Byrne’s crossbar.

The hosts started the second-half with intent to build on their lead, with Byrne twice called into action to deny United following the restart.

15 minutes into the half, skipper Bradley McClenaghan hooked the ball off the line as a header arrowed towards the bottom corner.

Defence turned into attack moments later for Orient’s captain. Papadopoulos pressed and won back possession, before playing a reverse ball for McClenaghan, whose chipped ball over the Keeper was cleared from danger as the goal beckoned.

With 70 minutes on the clock, Cambridge added a fourth. A header was spectacularly saved by Byrne who dived well to his right, but unfortunately the ball feel kindly for an attacker to prod into an open goal.

As the full-time whistle drew closer, United added their fifth and final goal after 89 minutes. The ball zipped around the penalty area as the O’s blocked multiple efforts, before finally the ball crossed the line to make the score 5-0.
