COMMUNITY: Leyton Orient Women’s Footballers inspire the next generation

9 May 2019

On Thursday 25 April a group of girls from St Joseph’s Primary School were welcomed in to The Breyer Group Stadium. Their trip was organised by Kim Evans, Leyton Orient Trust Lead Female Development Coach, as a reward to celebrate the girls’ achievement in the afterschool football sessions they attend at their school.

The group’s visit started with a tour of the stadium, before heading into the Fans for Diversity Hub to meet Ella Meadowcroft, Striker, and Susan Fagbohun, Left Back, from Leyton Orient Women’s Football Club for a Q&A session.  The students took the opportunity to ask the players about their playing career to date, what inspired them to play and any difficulties they had experienced along the way.

Sandra, Pupil, St.Joseph’s Primary School, said: “It was exciting to meet grown up football girls.”

Kaziah, Pupil, St.Joseph’s Primary School, said: “My mum is going to let me join a football club outside school now because she heard what the two lady footballers said.”

Cathy O’Sullivan, Teacher, St.Joseph’s Primary School, said: “A big thank you for inviting the girls to visit Leyton Orient FC. It was a very enjoyable visit and the pupils were very excited to be shown around the Club. They were very inspired by the women players listening to how they started playing and the difficulties they experienced as young girls.”

Ella Meadowcroft, Player, Leyton Orient Women’s Football Club, said : “I think it’s important that we are able to be in a position where we are an inspiration to younger girls. I think when we were growing up we didn’t really have that, as women’s football was only just starting. I think it’s really important that now young girls have people that they can look up to and be inspired to be women footballers.”

The girls afterschool football club at St Joseph’s Schools is delivered by Leyton Orient Trust as part of the Premier League Primary Stars programme. www.leytonorienttrust.org.uk/primaryschools
